The Allan Government’s promise to deliver 80,000 homes a year, over ten years, is in doubt only months after the promise was made.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data has revealed the number of houses approved for construction fell by 2.3 per cent in November 2023.
Despite needing a dramatic increase in building approvals to meet their target, Labor has overseen a decline in building approvals across the residential market, with key industry groups such as the Housing Industry Association and Master Builders Association publicly acknowledging that Labor’s target won’t be met.
Shadow Minister for Home Ownership and Housing Affordability, Evan Mulholland, said: “Yet again Victorians can see that Labor won’t even come close to meeting its targets.
“Just like the Commonwealth Games debacle, the Labor Government’s plan to build 800,000 homes over the next ten years is a con job. It simply can’t and won’t be achieved.”
Shadow Minister for Planning, James Newbury, said: “The new housing figures, which show a fall in building approvals, prove that Labor’s housing promise was another fib aimed at tricking the most vulnerable into believing they might one day afford a home.
“It’s time for Jacinta Allan to admit Labor has fibbed to Victorians, will never meet the housing promise, and has failed thousands of Victorians who desperately dream of one day owning their own home.”
