The rights, talents and citizenship of Lake Macquarie children are being celebrated as part of national Children’s Week, which began on Saturday 22 October.

This year’s theme highlights article 27 of the UN Convention’s Rights of the Child – “You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can’t do many of the things other kids can do”.

Lake Macquarie City Council Community Planner Children and Families Erin Pascall said this year’s theme was reflected in various Council programs.

“Our You’re Kidding Me program is all about educating parents how to best nurture children from the very beginning of their lives,” Ms Pascall said.

“There’s three more educational sessions to be held over the next two months, which focus on navigating boundaries and big emotions and finding more ways of connecting after COVID-19.

“Furthermore, Council’s inaugural Confident Kids program aims to support children and families in developing resilience in the face of the challenges children and young people have experienced due to natural disasters and COVID-19.

“With more than 55,000 families living in Lake Macquarie, supporting education and family service providers – as well as encouraging children’s development and wellbeing – is vital.”

Council is encouraging the community to keep up to date with social media pages, which will be generating new Children’s Week content throughout the week.
