Lake Wendouree gardens excel in landscape awards

The beauty of Lake Wendouree’s North Gardens has been celebrated with the presentation of a prestigious award.

The North Gardens Landscape Masterplan project, situated on the shores of Lake Wendouree, was awarded the Award of Excellence, which is the top award in the Cultural Heritage category of the 2020 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Victorian State Awards.

The project also picked up an AILA (Vic) Regional Achievement Award.

The project is part of the City of Ballarat’s Lake and Gardens Masterplan, which will establish a park dedicated to public artworks created by First Nations artists.

Developed in collaboration with the traditional custodians of the land, North Gardens Sculpture Park Landscape Masterplan provides an informed and compelling framework for the future of a part of Lake Wendouree.

The project demonstrates leadership in new processes of engagement, embedded in deep listening.

The City of Ballarat has worked with Professor David Jones, Mandy Nicholson, Glenn Romanis and Basalt Art to develop the masterplan.

“The North Gardens Landscape Masterplan project is a stunning addition to the Lake Wendouree area,” the Mayor, Cr Ben Taylor, said.

“The team is to be commended for their dedicated work on the project and their strong commitment to public art.”
