Landmark redevelopment opened at Balcatta Senior High School

  • The $50 million redevelopment of Balcatta Senior High School, including a new sports hall, performing arts spaces, science laboratories and classrooms, is officially open.

    Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery and Balcatta MLA David Michael visited the school today to tour the impressive new facilities.

    The significant redevelopment is the largest investment in the school since it opened in 1967, which has drastically changed its look and feel.

    The modern facilities include new design and technologies areas and an indoor cafeteria, as well as a multi-storey building with a sports hall, fitness centre, performing arts spaces, administration facilities, new staff areas, science laboratories, general classrooms and student and staff toilets.

    Heritage classrooms and the school’s pool were refurbished to tie in with the state-of-the-art facilities. Architectural arches were also included throughout the new build to reflect the original school buildings.

    This project has supported the local community and created jobs. Balcatta-based builders PS Structures have managed the construction and Hassell Architects designed the state-of-the-art redevelopment.

    As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

    “I am proud to officially open this landmark redevelopment of Balcatta Senior High School.

    “Balcatta Senior High School has a renowned arts program and an impressive focus on the STEM curriculum.

    “The redeveloped science laboratories, design and technologies areas and performing arts spaces will provide students with additional opportunities for success in these areas.

    “I look forward to following the progress of Balcatta Senior High School students as they learn and thrive in these new state-of-the-art facilities.”

    As stated by Balcatta MLA David Michael:

    “I am proud to deliver this 2017 election commitment for a fantastic local school.

    “It is important for local students to have access to world-class facilities, and that is what these $50 million upgrades have delivered.

    “Balcatta Senior High School has gone from strength to strength and these new facilities will support the growing number of students at the school.

    “I look forward to seeing the school continue to grow.”
