The value of trees in our community will be celebrated on Saturday 16 September as part of Mildura Rural City Council’s ‘Cooling the Streets’ event.

Running from 10am to 2pm in the Langtree Mall, the family-friendly day will feature performances by the Amazing Drumming Monkeys, the Envrio Edu Animal Show, tree giveaways and competitions, food and drink, market stalls and nature play activities.

Councillor for Environment and Sustainability Jason Modica said the community day was a great opportunity to celebrate trees and the role they play in our community, while also enjoying a fun day out.

“Trees play a vital role in our community. They provide shade and visual appeal.” he said.

“Spring is upon us, and this event is a great chance for our community to come down to the Langtree Mall, embrace our trees and what they mean to our community, and also interact with staff and other local stakeholders and find out more about some of the exciting sustainability initiatives underway in our community,” he said.

Cr Modica said the Cooling the Streets event would also provide locals with the chance to get an update on the CBD Regener8 Project, which will see 500 new trees established in Mildura’s CBD area over the coming months.

“Regener8 is a comprehensive program of works aimed at providing more shade, better amenity, better access and a generally more attractive and inviting precinct for locals, businesses and visitors,” he said.

Other major improvements include extensive landscaping throughout the CBD precinct, additional seating, including more alfresco dining options and additional shade.

Tree-lined boulevard plantings, prioritising pedestrian connections which complement existing palm trees and visually linking the CBD to the riverfront are also key aims of the project.

The works are being delivered thanks to $300,000 from the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund.
