Last chance to nominate your local hero

Residents have until the end of this weekend to nominate a legend for a 2021 Australia Day Award.

Nominations for Townsville’s local heroes close at midnight on 6 December and Townsville City Council is calling on residents to get their nominations in now.

There are seven categories up for grabs and Mayor Jenny Hill said it’s important the community comes together to recognise the people behind the scenes keeping Townsville ticking.

“This year has been anything but normal and the pandemic following a devastating natural disaster has given our community no space to breathe,” Cr Hill said.

“That’s why I think it’s incredibly important that we take stock in celebrations like Australia Day and the Australia Day Awards and acknowledge those in our city that despite all of the hardship, still commit themselves to helping others.

“I urge everyone to nominate someone they know that has contributed to making Townsville the amazing place it is – whether it be a community organisation or an individual that gives their time to volunteer or pushes their own limits to achieve great things.

“This is a way we can bring the new year in with some positivity and celebrate all of the good happening in our community.”

The seven categories are:

1. Citizen of the Year

2. Young Citizen of the Year

3. Arts and Culture Award

4. Community Volunteer Award

5. Senior Sports Award

6. Junior Sports Award

7. Environmental Excellence and Sustainability Award.
