The final stage of Midland Highway upgrades is set to begin after key environmental approvals were received.
A contract for the construction of the Campbell Town North to Conara project – the final 10 km section of the highway – is expected to be awarded in the coming weeks, with work set to start in late 2026 and continue until late 2028.
The 10 km project will include road widening, turning improvements, sealed shoulders, overtaking lanes in both directions, and new flexible safety barriers to prevent crashes.
Under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, the Protected Matters Management Plan for this final stage has been accepted by the Australian Government, clearing the project to proceed to construction.
Construction of this stage will mark the completion of the Midland Highway Action Plan and see a consistent 3-star safety rating under the Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) on the Midland Highway.
The project is jointly funded through the Australian and Tasmanian governments $605 million commitment to the Midland Highway Action Plan.
Since the program started, approx. 143km of the highway has been upgraded, providing a safer and more efficient journey on the key north-south corridor.
The upgrades have widened the highway, installed safety barriers along the sides and centre of the highway to prevent head-on and loss-of-control crashes, and delivered more safe overtaking opportunities through dedicated lanes.
