This page has information to help Australian exporters manage the impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak on their business.
Advice for exporters
- The official Chinese New Year holiday has been extended in China, with many businesses in key cities and regions remaining closed until 10 February. A number of industries have reduced operating capacity, including at some Chinese ports and factories.
- Media reports of export bans are incorrect – no export bans have been imposed
- Demand for high-end premium product is expected to slow, which will impact overall import demand.
We are aware a number of planned events and business activities in China, and/or events promoting business ties with China in Australia, may have been cancelled or postponed. Businesses are advised to contact their local Austrade office or Tradestart representative for up-to-date information.
Advice for travellers
On 1 February, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade raised the overall travel advice for mainland China to ‘Level 4 – Do Not Travel’.
Australians in China have been advised to leave as soon as possible by commercial means. Returning Australian citizens/permanent residents and their immediate family will be required to isolate themselves for 14 days after leaving mainland China.

Going forward
Austrade is monitoring the impact on our clients and business more generally. We are working with our partners, industry and marketing bodies, and the education and tourism sectors, as well as state and territory governments to ensure businesses have access to relevant information that will assist them with decision-making and maintaining business continuity.
China will continue to offer Australian businesses significant opportunities and growth prospects. At the appropriate time, Austrade will look to assist businesses and our partner agencies with strategies and initiatives aimed at rebuilding business links and restoring confidence.
