Latest jobs data

Peter Gutwein,Premier

Keeping Tasmanians safe is the Government’s highest priority as we face the significant challenges of coronavirus. In addition to the health impacts, there is also a significant social and economic impact associated with coronavirus.

While the latest ABS data shows Tasmanian employment increased to 258,200 in early March 2020 in trend terms, it is important to recognise that this does not reflect the current reality for many Tasmanians.

Thousands of Tasmanians have either been stood down or lost their jobs as a result of the tough restrictions we’ve had to put in place.

The ABS notes that the March data describes the labour market shortly before the major restrictions in Australia to contain the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The full impact of COVID-19 on our economy is likely to be reflected in data released in coming months.

Both the Federal and Tasmanian governments have provided unprecedented economic and social support packages to underpin the health and well-being of Tasmanians and support our businesses, community groups and economy wherever possible.
