Labor’s so-called housing plan is to lazily copy everything the Government is already doing and pretend they are their ideas, such as our long-term 10,000 homes target, and our successful shared equity program MyHome.
Labor can’t have it both ways: you can’t criticise the government’s plan, then try to adopt it as your own.
Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street said that last week, Labor wasted a whole Parliament week making utterly false allegations about Homes Tasmania and their tenants and attacking the Government over its long-term target to increase our portfolio of social and affordable homes by 10,000.
“Homes Tasmania is finalising the Government’s 20-year Housing Strategy and I expect it will cover a range of innovative public and private partnership options to increase supply in all form, including rental accommodation,” Minister Street said.
“The establishment of Homes Tasmania allows the government to be far more flexible and innovative in its approach to addressing the housing challenge.
“But Labor voted against Homes Tasmania, just because of ideological opposition to it.
“Labor’s record on housing when in government with the Greens was woeful and its claims today are simply not believable.
“When they were in government with the Greens, Labor was selling government houses to pay for maintenance.
“They left a $90 million maintenance bill because they didn’t repair homes – but this Liberal government has been able to undertake maintenance and increase the supply of housing.
“Their claim about “untenantable homes” shows they have no idea, given the same data source (ROGS) shows that in 2013 – under the Labor-Green Government – there were 268 untenantable dwellings in Tasmania – a higher number!
“Labor has confirmed it has no plan except to waste time in Parliament. In contrast, the Government is getting on with the job of increasing the supply of social and affordable housing by 10,000 homes by 2032,” Minister Street said.
