The Bakery Hill Revitalisation Plan has achieved a milestone with the City of Ballarat appointing international design practice Hassell to lead the next stage of this exciting project. The design team will also include local design firms PLOT Landscape Architecture and Cardno TGM.
The Bakery Hill Urban Renewal Plan was adopted by Council in October 2019 with a commitment of $15 million dollars over three financial years to fund the key element of the Bakery Hill Renewal Plan – the Bridge Mall Rejuvenation Project.
The appointment of a designer to revitalise the Bridge Mall is the result of a thorough and competitive process undertaken by Council.
Hassell has a strong track record in delivering award-winning urban design and landscape architecture projects across Australia and around the world including Darling Harbour Transformation in Sydney, the New Museum for Western Australia in Perth in joint venture with OMA, and Resilient South City as part of the Resilient by Design Bay Area Challenge in San Francisco, California.
“This appointment is a significant step and one that will help drive the renewal of the Bridge Mall as part of the vision for the Bakery Hill precinct,” Ballarat Mayor, Cr Ben Taylor said.
”This is a very experienced design team who have instilled a sense of confidence in being able to deliver a project that will be both sympathetic to the history of the Bakery Hill precinct and creative in in its urban design,” he said.
Hassell Principal, Mark Haycox said his firm was excited to be awarded the role of supporting Council and the community to create a new, thriving, connected and distinctive meeting place for Ballarat.
“Bakery Hill’s renewal plan can underpin a truly remarkable visitor experience and be the focus and catalyst that draws together the best that Ballarat and the region has to offer. It can help reposition the entire Bakery Hill precinct as a destination” he said.
“We will be building on the extensive work already undertaken by Council to endorse the plan, the result being a beautiful place for locals that is alive, fresh and welcoming, and a true reflection of Ballarat,” Mr Haycox said.
Hassell has already begun work on the project.
