Lemon Springs April update

EPA Victoria has safely excavated and removed all waste from the 32 burial sites at Lemon Springs. Eighteen of these sites have been backfilled with clean soil.

EPA is nearing the final operational stages of the clean-up of the Lemon Springs illegal waste dump, with major clean-up activities to be completed by mid-2023. Auditing, monitoring and reporting requirements are continuing until the end of this year.

More than 1,650 tonnes of liquid waste and 8,700 tonnes of contaminated soil has been removed from the site. More than 34,000 tonnes of contaminated soil have been discovered. Where possible, soil is being treated at an onsite facility. Once clean, it will be reused for backfilling excavated sites.

Excavation of acetylene cylinders is complete with 51,543 cylinders discovered. EPA has entered into a contract with Enviropacific to recycle and process the acetylene cylinders recovered at the site. The company is in the process of setting up a new facility at Stawell, the first facility of its kind in Australia.

The onsite wastewater operations has treated 3,300 kilolitres of contaminated water to date.

EPA will continue to conduct regular sampling of groundwater and will keep the community updated with the results.

“It has been a major project that has been completed to the highest safety standards. We will be giving the local community a full update at a community meeting shortly,” EPA Project Manager Julian Bull said.
