Light Rail Safety Week, an annual campaign promoting safe behaviour on and around the light rail network, begins today, Monday 10 August 2026.
“Light Rail Safety Week is an opportunity to reinforce the shared responsibility we all have in creating a safe and reliable transport network for the Canberra community,” Minister for Transport, Tara Cheyne said.
“Rail safety is everyone’s responsibility. By staying alert and following simple safety rules, we can all help prevent incidents and keep our community safe. Whether you’re walking, cycling, driving or travelling on light rail, small actions can make a big difference.
“To stay safe around light rail, follow traffic signals, signs and road markings, stay alert and avoid distractions such as mobile phones and headphones. Always stop, look and listen before crossing the tracks.”
As part of Light Rail Safety Week, Transport Canberra has released a new near-miss video highlighting the importance of staying alert around the light rail network and onboard services.
The footage demonstrates how a momentary lapse in attention by pedestrians, cyclists, motorists or passengers can lead to potentially serious incidents.
Minister Cheyne said the video reinforces the need for everyone to stay aware of their surroundings, follow road rules and signage, and travel Safley onboard ACT light rail services.
“While incidents are rare, near misses show how quickly situations can develop. Whether you’re walking, driving, cycling or travelling on light rail, paying attention and making safe choices helps keep everyone safe,” Minister Cheyne said.
ACT local schools also play an important role in promoting light rail safety awareness.
“We’re proud of the connection local schools have built with light rail. Since services began, students have helped share important safety messages with the wider community,” Minister Cheyne said.
Winning designs from students from Burgmann Anglican School, Daramalan College, Dickson College and Gungahlin College will be displayed on light rail vehicles wraps across the network during Rail Safety Week and throughout the year.
The Canberra community is invited to vote for their favourite poster design through the People’s Choice Award.
This year’s competition features 32 creative poster designs from local students, each promoting the importance of rail safety in our community.
Voting opens today and will be open for three weeks, closing at 11:59 pm on Monday 31 August 2026.
Minister Cheyne also acknowledged the contribution of Canberra Metro Operations and its staff in supporting a safe and reliable light rail service.
“The success of light rail is built on the dedication and professionalism of the people who operate and maintain the network every day. Their ongoing commitment helps ensure Canberrans can continue to rely on a safe, dependable and connected public transport system,” Minister Cheyne said.
