Light, space explored in new Perc Tucker Regional Gallery exhibitions

Architecture will take over Perc Tucker Regional Gallery as two exploratory exhibitions launch tonight.

Townsville-based photographer Andrew Rankin’s Chasing Light – Architecture of the North explores new contemporary buildings and the changing landscape of urban centres in North Queensland, particularly in Townsville and Cairns.

The exhibition leans into a photographer’s ability to find illumination to showcase structure, shape and texture and captures the unique character of the buildings of North Queensland.

Lost in Palm Springs has been curated by Greer Honeywill and examines the aesthetic connection between Palm Springs, California and Australia.

Place and home, landscapes and Bauhaus style inform the works in this exhibition, curated following Dr Honeywill’s three artist residencies in Palm Springs between 2017 and 2019.

Cr Ann-Maree Greaney will launch the exhibitions tonight and said the complementary nature of the works would be interesting for visitors to the gallery.

“These two exhibitions are a celebration of style and form from North Queensland right through to the United States,” Cr Greaney said.

“The exploratory nature of these exhibitions is very interesting and I think visitors to the gallery will really enjoy these two unique and complementary exhibitions.

“As a Council we’re committed to providing opportunities for growth of local artists, and for this exhibition we’re proud to have local artist Andrew Rankin exhibiting at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.

“All are welcome to the launch, which starts at 7pm sharp tonight at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there.”

Cr Greaney said the exhibition was just one of a slew of fun events for residents and visitors to enjoy this weekend.

“The city is proud to be hosting the Townsville Triathlon and Multisport Festival this weekend, along with events like Riverway Movie Nights, the North Queensland Elite Rodeo, the Townsville STEM Faire, the Bluewater Gardening Fair and Flower Show, and markets at Mundingburra, Magnetic Island, Willows and the city centre,” she said.

“Our city has been buzzing with activity for the past few weekends and I’m looking forward to seeing a hive of activity in Townsville yet again this weekend.”

Chasing Light – Architecture of the North and Lost in Palm Springs launch tonight, Friday August 18, at 7pm. The exhibitions will both run until September 24.

Perc Tucker Regional Gallery opens from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 1pm Saturday and Sunday and is free to visit.
