Liquor seizure – MacDonnell Region

Northern Territory Police have seized a large quantity of alcohol destined for remote communities in Central Australia.

Around 6:30pm yesterday, Kulgera Police apprehended a blue Mazda 3 on the Stuart Highway carrying two females.

A search of the vehicle located over 200 litres of alcohol including:

  • 43 x 4 litre wine casks
  • 12 x bottles of spirits
  • 54 x cans of alcohol

The 37-year-old driver has been issued with driving infringements and the incident remains under investigation. The alcohol has since been destroyed by police.

Superintendent of Southern Desert Division Drew Slape said “This is commendable work by local members who have made a huge impact on secondary supply into the Central Desert and MacDonnell Regions.

“Time and time again we have to remind individuals of the massive social and financial impacts the illicit supply of alcohol and drugs has on vulnerable remote communities. More times than not, alcohol is involved in domestic and family violence and NT Police will continue to disrupt its illegal supply into restricted areas.

“Anyone with information on the supply of alcohol or drugs into our communities can call police on 131 444 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
