Live music returns to the Civic Green this weekend with Warrnambool FReeZA presenting a free, all-ages music event on March 6 and 7 from 3-6pm.
Weekend on the Green will host performances from young local musicians Monique Brown, Mel and Tess, the Flynn Gurry Band, Ruby McKenna, Gabby Steel and Snakes Don’t Need Keys.
Event organiser and local audio producer Nathan McTaggart approached Council’s Youth Department in December with the idea of hosting the event, which he said he hoped would bring back the joy of live music.
“Last year I was living in Melbourne, and I was in lockdown all year. One day late in the year, I got off the train at Flinders Street and heard live music coming from Federation Square,” he said.
“It was the first live music I’d heard in so long, and it really hit me.
“Live music was back! And when I came home to Warrnambool, I wanted to help create that feeling for other people.”
He said that the February lockdown, which threatened to scupper the event, was another reminder of how fragile the current situation is.
“We’re not going to be out of the woods of (COVID-19) for a while yet, and it’s definitely made me appreciate what we have a lot more,” he said.
“Anyone attending can expect a lot of live music from young talented musicians. This is an event created for youth by youth.”
Weekend on the Green is a drug and alcohol free event. It is also a COVID-safe event. People are encouraged to arrive in groups of two to six people in order to share their own socially distanced space together.
