Five local organisations will deliver projects aimed at improving Darwin’s environment and building community resilience through City of Darwin’s 2026/27 Environment and Climate Change Grants Program.
The successful projects range from restoring native habitat in Coconut Grove and Nightcliff to helping businesses and community organisations reuse surplus materials.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the projects demonstrated the value of supporting local organisations to take practical environmental action.
“These projects are tackling some of the environmental and climate challenges that matter to our community in practical and innovative ways,” Mr Styles said.
“Whether it is finding new ways to reuse materials, preparing our community for emergencies or educating the next generation, these initiatives will deliver benefits for our community.
“It is great to see local organisations bringing forward ideas that can make a difference at a grassroots level,” he said.
The successful 2026/27 projects are:
- Mutla Landcare Group – trialling a weed management and revegetation program between Coconut Grove and Nightcliff, testing Coffee Bush removal techniques and restoring native species.
- Jesuit Social Services – facilitating climate change resilience workshops and climate change action plans for organisations.
- Charles Darwin University – providing a Business-to-Community material matchmaking pilot for Darwin, connecting businesses with community users to reuse surplus materials.
- Integrated Disability Action Inc – facilitating inclusive community emergency preparedness workshops for people living with disability and their carers.
- Environment + Climate Futures at Charles Darwin University – providing a climate change and environment education program for Darwin primary schools, supporting climate resilience, environmental stewardship and climate change response planning.
The Environment and Climate Change Grants Program supports local projects that contribute to actions under City of Darwin’s 2030 Climate Emergency Strategy, Greening Darwin Strategy and/or Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy.
Projects are required to deliver positive and measurable environmental outcomes and must be completed within 12 months of funding being awarded.
