Local Government Week Celebrates Locals

Local Government Week runs from Monday 3 August to Sunday 9 August, recognising the many ways councils help shape everyday life.

While councils have been traditionally known for their work on roads, rates and rubbish, over the years the range of services they are tasked with providing has expanded.

MidCoast Council provides over 30 different services – from things we see like parks, playgrounds and pools to libraries, sporting facilities and community spaces, to things we might not readily think of like protecting the environment; providing ranger services; conducting food safety inspections; registering pets.

Mayor Claire Pontin said Local Government Week was an opportunity to recognise locals who keep the community running.

Like many rural and regional councils, Midcoast Council has a small annual budget relative to the size of the area and the length of its road network.

“Many people don’t realise that staff are expected to work to a tight budget, stretch resources, seek government grants, and provide the best value for money service for our community,” said Mayor Pontin.

“They often face daily challenges like dealing with complex legacy issues on parts of our road network, and making the best of decisions made by other levels of government or before our time.

“We are very proud of our staff who help deliver the services and facilities our community relies on, often without people realising just how much happens behind the scenes.”

Staff include people from many different backgrounds and professions, including engineers, electricians, educators, librarians, environmental specialists, planners, labourers, customer service staff and many more. Together, they help create a safe, vibrant and welcoming region.

Mayor Pontin explained that Council works with a number of other local organisations to help attract local young people to upcoming roles, including traineeships and apprenticeships.

Information sessions for traineeships and apprenticeships beginning 2027 will be held 3 and 4 September 4.30 to 6.00pm at Council’s Customer Service and Administration Centre, Yalawanyi Ganya, Biripi Way, Taree. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to attend. You can complete an Expression of Interest form in order to receive updates about upcoming opportunities and the recruitment process.

Mayor Claire Pontin said the elected body really appreciates staff, volunteers, and all the individuals and community groups who have taken the time to have their say on Council projects and policies.

“The best outcomes for the community happen when Council and community communicate and work together,” said Mayor Pontin.
