In July, the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA), with support from Mornington Peninsula Shire, will be running a free full day workshop for women on the Mornington Peninsula who are considering running for local government in 2020.
Women make up 51% of Victoria’s population – they should make up more than 38% of local government councillors in Victoria.
Women across the state have a significant contribution to make to public life.
Their connections to their community, their skills and their unique perspectives mean they are rich with potential to be great local councillors.
It is critical for women from a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and abilities to run for local government.
This workshop aims to connect women with the knowledge, skills and contacts to potentially become local government councillors.
What you will learn at the free and innovative workshop:
Local Government 101
What do councils do? What is the role of a councillor? How do I become a candidate and how do I get elected?
The workshop will answer all these questions and more, providing a primer to local government and the roles and responsibilities of councils and councillors.
Candidate Development
The VLGA’s Candidate Development workshops provide strategies for managing your campaign, planning for success and connecting with and convincing voters.
The workshop will cover key considerations for candidates, including policy platforms, connecting with community and key skills and campaigning techniques.
