Central Goldfields Shire Council is urging residents to support Maryborough’s remaining banks after Bank Australia became the latest bank to announce it is closing its local branch.

Council is extremely disappointed with the closure announcement which will further limit the number of banking opportunities in the Central Goldfields Shire and put further pressure on the struggling retail sector.

Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey is encouraging community members to ‘vote with their feet’ and support the banks that are committed to retaining a local retail branch in the Shire.

“It is simply not good enough to expect residents to travel out of town to meet their banking needs. If people are doing their banking out of town then they are going to do their shopping out of town too which will have a significant impact on local traders in Maryborough”.

“To help avoid further bank closures, I urge all residents to support the remaining bank branches by transferring their accounts to those banks that are committed to remaining in Maryborough and supporting the community.”

Central Goldfields Shire Council is committed to supporting local bank branches and does its banking through Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Council’s banking contract requires the successful bidder to maintain a branch facility in Maryborough.
