Major Investments In Bentley Health Service Progressing

  • Forward works tender released for $167 million Bentley Health Service Surgicentre, jointly funded by the Cook and Albanese Labor Governments
  • Georgiou Group Pty Ltd awarded tender to deliver Western Australia’s first Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) at Bentley Health Service

The Cook and Albanese Labor Governments are progressing the $167 million Bentley Health Service Surgicentre, expanding access to care in Perth’s south-eastern corridor and expanding elective surgery capacity.

Proposals are now open for a contractor to deliver forward works for the project, with the tender set to close on 23 June.

The Bentley Surgicentre is a purpose-built facility and will include:

  • six surgical theatres;
  • two procedure rooms;
  • a 24-bed surgical ward; and
  • a new central sterilisation services department.

Jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, Bentley Surgicentre will aim to efficiently provide elective surgery across a range of surgical and procedural specialties.

The project will deliver a new, contemporary surgical facility designed to improve access to planned procedures, reduce pressure on the broader hospital system, and will assist in separating elective surgery from emergency care to help reduce waiting times for patients.

Works are occurring right across the Bentley Health Service campus, with the main works tender for Western Australia’s first Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) awarded to Georgiou Group Pty Ltd.

The $67.1 million 24-bed SECU will provide specialised care for involuntary mental health patients aged 18 to 64 years who are experiencing severe mental health conditions.

Designed to support longer-term treatment and recovery, with the goal to eventually transition to independent community living, the facility will accommodate patients for periods ranging from six months to three years, with an expected average length of stay around one year.

Additionally, the 2026-27 State Budget is funding $2.8 million to refurbish a building at Bentley Health Service for the local community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

These investments form part of the Cook Labor Government’s $5.5 billion health infrastructure program, focused on ensuring more Western Australians can access the care they need, when they need it.

As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

“The Cook Labor Government is making significant investments in Bentley Health Service, with progress continuing on both the Surgicentre and the Secure Extended Care Unit.

“The Bentley Surgicentre will expand surgical capacity and improve access to care, while the SECU will be an important facility for those experiencing severe mental health conditions.

“These projects are part of our $5.5 billion investment in health infrastructure, building new hospitals and upgrading hospitals across the State.”

As stated by Health and Mental Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

“The Bentley Surgicentre will play a key role in reducing elective surgery wait times and improving patient flow across our hospital system, particularly in the growing south-eastern corridor

“We are making significant progress on Western Australia’s first Secure Extended Care Unit at Bentley Health Service, which will provide specialised, longer-term care and support recovery for people experiencing severe mental health conditions.

“Separating elective and emergency surgery means fewer delays and cancellations, and more certainty for patients awaiting planned procedures.

“This is about bringing more beds online across our health system and delivering more efficient, people-centred care and ensuring Western Australians can access timely treatment when they need it.”

Comments attributed to Federal Member for Swan Zaneta Mascarenhas:

“This investment from the Albanese and Cook Labor Governments will ease pressure on our hospital system by separating elective surgery from emergency care, cutting waiting times for patients.

“Local families deserve facilities that are fit for purpose, and this is an important part of improving the care available to them.”

Comments attributed to Victoria Park MLA Hannah Beazley:

“I’m pleased to see progress being made on this important project in my community.

“This surgical centre will deliver high-quality care for our community and is part of the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to ensuring Western Australians have access to the health care they need, when they need it.”
