Major Peel Healthcare Projects Approach Key Milestones

  • Peel Health Campus on track to return to public hands in August 2024
  • Planning for major redevelopment approaching final stages
  • Negotiations for new private hospital next to Peel Health Campus underway
  • New community Mental Health and Eating Disorders Service to open in 2025

The Peel Health Campus (PHC) project is set to reach significant milestones in the coming months, with the hospital on track to be a Government-owned and operated facility in August 2024.

Works are also progressing on the redevelopment of Peel Health Campus, with planning well underway. Redevelopment enabling works are expected to commence before the end of the year, with a tender to be released soon.

The current redevelopment budget of $152 million will be updated when final planning is complete, with existing funding utilised to progress redevelopment enabling works.

The scope of works will include more than 60 additional inpatient beds, including more mental health inpatient beds, 15 palliative care hospice beds, an additional operating theatre and the introduction of a new Mental Health Emergency Centre.

It will also deliver 12 chemotherapy places, more outpatient services, and a new build of medical imaging services, along with a reconfiguration of the emergency department and expansion of the day procedure unit.

In addition, a Market-led Proposal for a new private hospital, to be built and operate adjacent to the public hospital is being progressed, with Ramsay Health Care now in exclusive negotiations with the State on the proposal.

This is on top of the $10 million upgrade for Peel Health Campus already delivered and includes an expanded emergency department, additional car parking, overhauled nurse call system and increased security.

South Metropolitan Health Service is well on track to deliver the new $17.5 million Community Mental Health and Specialist Community Eating Disorders Service in Peel, which is funded by the Commonwealth.

The service will deliver more mental healthcare in the community where people need it most, keeping people out of hospital, built on the principles of person-centred and evidence-based care.

The Community Mental Health and Specialist Community Eating Disorders Service is on top of the satellite Kara Marr service that opened at Peel Health Hub in Mandurah in December 2023, supporting a continuum of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare settings for patients.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“My Government continues to invest in the health and wellbeing of people living in the Peel region and is progressing a suite of important projects, including returning the Peel Health Campus back into public hands.

“From August 2024 Peel Health Campus will be a Government-owned and operated hospital, and we will soon finalise planning for the redevelopment.

“We have also recently entered negotiations with Ramsay Health Care for a new private hospital adjacent to PHC which will deliver expanded care options to the local community.”

As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“We are constantly evaluating services across the State to ensure models of care fit with the needs of local communities, and in Peel this is demonstrated by our ongoing investment in improved services.

“We are delivering a new $17.5 million Community Mental Health and Specialist Community Eating Disorders Service in Peel, jointly funded by the Commonwealth, which will significantly improve access to services.

“We are also investing in major upgrades at Peel Health Campus including more beds, more outpatient services, and a new 10-bed Mental Health Emergency Centre as part of the redevelopment.”

Comments attributed to Mandurah MLA David Templeman:

“Peel Health Campus is an important asset to our community and by returning it to public hands and undertaking a major redevelopment the Cook Government is ensuring it will continue to meet the needs of our region into the future.

“In a significant step forward for this project, the redevelopment enabling works are expected to commence before the end of the year, with a tender to be released soon, and the current redevelopment budget will be updated when final planning is complete.”

Comments attributed to Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday:

“This significant redevelopment includes 12 chemotherapy places, more outpatient services, and expansion of the day procedure unit, which will improve the patient experience.

“First class facilities also help attract and retain healthcare workers and with the vast majority of staff transitioning from Ramsay to the South Metropolitan Health Service redevelopment will help ensure they continue to have a great place to work.”

Comments attributed to Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:

“The Cook Government continues to invest in Peel Health Campus, and I am looking forward to this important project reaching new milestones in the coming months.

“The $10 million PHC upgrade already delivered has benefited patients through an expanded emergency department, expanded car park, overhauled nurse call system and increased security but the redevelopment will go even further.”
