Construction on the $52 million expansion of Norwood Morialta High School has begun, beginning the process of merging two campuses into one and expanding the school’s capacity to 1700 students.
The project is the largest upgrade occurring on an existing school site as part of the Marshall Liberal Government’s record $1.3 billion education build.
It is expected that construction will see around 750 people employed on site over the course of the project, which is set to be completed in time to welcome students in Term 1, 2022.
There are now 42 school projects under construction across South Australia.
Premier Steven Marshall said the upgrade would deliver state-of-the-art facilities for local families while providing a much-needed jobs boost.
“Our record-breaking $1.3 billion education infrastructure build is delivering thousands of construction jobs at a crucial time for our economy, and this $52 million project is a significant part of that,” said Premier Marshall.
“We have more than 100 school building projects being delivered in the coming years, spanning as far as Ceduna to Mount Gambier, providing a solid pipeline of jobs and delivering a generational upgrade of schools right across the state.
“This upgrade at Norwood Morialta High School will bring all year levels on to one campus by 2022, providing state-of-the-art facilities for students and dramatically lifting the capacity of this school to 1700 students.”
The upgrade at Norwood Morialta High School will deliver a new three storey middle school building with a roof top play space, a new two storey building for a technical and specialist precinct, refurbishment and extension the existing gymnasium, a new façade entry statement, landscaping, car parks and new sports courts.
Education Minister John Gardner said families in the eastern suburbs will be excited to see work underway on the upgrade.
“We know that there is a growing demand on schools in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, and the upgrade of Norwood Morialta High School is a critical part of increasing the enrolment capacity for public education in the area,” said Minister Gardner.
“The concept images for this development showcase a world class upgrade to the school’s facilities, and the local community will be eager to see work progress rapidly in the coming months.
“It is great to see shovels in the ground on so many school building projects as part of the Marshall Government’s $1.3 billion education build, which is meeting a range of critical needs across our education system while delivering thousands of much needed jobs for South Australians.”
Member for Hartley, Vincent Tarzia, said the redevelopment would turn Norwood Morialta High School into a modernised, world class facility.
“The upgrades which are about to commence are going to transform the school into a specialist learning space that will be enjoyed by children for generations to come,” said Minister Tarzia.
“The new facilities will be among the best on offer to students in South Australia.”
Chris Leopold, General Manager SA for Lendlease Building, was pleased to be delivering another significant project as part of the Government’s education build.
“Today marks the start of construction upgrades at a second South Australian school Lendlease is delivering,” said Mr Leopold.
“The co-location of Norwood Morialta’s current two campuses will benefit the local school community and create a range of job opportunities for South Australians.”
