Premier Roger Cook and Education Minister Tony Buti today officially opened $31.7 million in upgrades at Karratha Senior High School.

Delivered by the Cook Labor Government, the school’s new technology learning area building features an engineering workshop, metal workshop, kiln and design rooms, mechatronics laboratory, STEM laboratory, IT laboratories, digital design laboratory, media classrooms, a film studio and staff study areas.

Upgrades to the school also include a major refurbishment to specialist learning areas to create a commercial kitchen, an extension to the administration building to accommodate student services, and the addition of a covered hard court.

Karratha Senior High School has more than 1,200 students enrolled and is the only public secondary school in town.

The upgrades build on the school’s modern science facilities, a performing arts centre and gymnasium, to help meet continued growth in student enrolments.

They were designed by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects and built by Decmil, and are part of the State Government’s $1.5 billion school infrastructure program to deliver new and modern public schools across Western Australia.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“My Government is committed to investing in schools across Western Australia to ensure students receive a quality education no matter where they live.

“Karratha Senior High School is growing, and these new facilities will help to cater for future enrolments.

“These significant upgrades will also provide local students with fantastic learning opportunities in areas like technology, engineering, media and digital design.”

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“We’re committed to ensuring all public schools are of the highest standard.

“Karratha Senior High School is a terrific school, and these upgrades will allow it to better serve the needs of the local community.

“The outstanding facilities will inspire students and allow for relevant learning opportunities, getting them ready for future workforce requirements.”

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

“As our community grows, having great local schools is vital for local families.

“I am proud to have been able to deliver this upgrade and to enhance local education opportunities for students and our excellent local teachers.”
