Man arrested following Maeroa incident

As stated by Sergeant Luke Thompson, Hamilton Police:

A man is in custody following a serious incident in Maeroa, Hamilton tonight.

Emergency services were called to Churchill Avenue at about 8.55pm to reports of a serious assault.

One person has critical injuries. One person has serious injuries, and two other people are injured. They have now been transported to hospital with suspected knife wounds.

As the incident unfolded one victim fled on foot to a nearby property to seek assistance and was followed there by the offender. It is alleged that a firearm was discharged by an occupant at that property, without causing injury.

Police arrived quickly and arrested the offender. A 23-year-old man is in custody and will face charges related to the incident. We are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

We acknowledge that this will have been disruptive and frightening for people in the area and we reassure public that we do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety.

There are scene guards, cordons and an increased Police presence in the area while we work to understand the circumstances of the incident.
