Man charged after an alleged act of animal cruelty – Murrumbidgee

A man will face court following an alleged act of animal cruelty in the Griffith area.

In September 2023, officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District commenced an investigation following several reports of two dogs being allegedly poisoned on several occasions.

Following inquiries, officers from the Griffith Proactive Crime Team executed a search warrant at a home in Griffith about 1.20pm on Thursday 1 February 2024.

During the search, police located and seized a number of items including an air rifle, air rifle ammunition, and a cleaning kit.

A 63-year-old male was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station, where he was charged with torture, beat etc and cause prolonged suffering to animal, commit an act of cruelty upon an animal, fire firearm in a manner likely to injure persons/property, possess unauthorised firearm, possess unregistered firearm-not pistol/prohibited firearm, not keep firearm safely-not pistol/prohibited firearm, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Griffith Local Court on Wednesday 24 April 2024.
