A man has been charged with mid-range PCA and exceeding the speed limit after allegedly being detected travelling at more than 160 km/h on the Kings Highway in the state’s south.
About 10:45pm on Friday 19 June 2026, Far South Highway Patrol officers were conducting stationary testing when they allegedly detected a hatchback travelling east on the Kings Highway, Braidwood, at 160 km/hr in a 100km/hr signposted zone.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle; however, when the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.
The car continued east on the Kings Highway, before it allegedly conducted a u-turn and continued west towards Braidwood.
The car entered Clyde Mountain, before coming to a stop east of Government Bend after allegedly striking a wombat a short time earlier. The collision caused extensive damage to the front of the car.
The 44-year-old driver was arrested and subjected to a roadside breath and drug test, where he allegedly returned a positive reading for alcohol and drugs.
He was taken to Batemans Bay Police Station and subjected to a secondary breath test, returning an alleged reading of 0.089.
He was subjected to a secondary drug test and allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine. The sample has been sent away for secondary testing.
The man was charged with class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive with middle range PCA, use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road and use uninsured motor vehicle on road.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday 13 July 2026.
