Man in court after assaulting ride-share driver in Berala

A man will appear in court charged with the alleged robbery and assault of a ride-share driver in Sydney’s west last month.

About 9.10pm on Friday 8 May 2020, a ride-share driver picked up a male customer from an address on Second Avenue, Berala.

During the drive, the customer allegedly became abusive before the driver stopped the vehicle on Walters Road and asked him to get out.

The customer then allegedly punched the driver in the face, grabbed his collar and tore his shirt, before taking the driver’s phone and fleeing on foot.

The driver pursued the customer but lost sight of him on First Avenue.

Auburn Police Area Command was alerted to the incident and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, about 3pm yesterday (Friday 5 June 2020), police attended a home on Fourth Avenue in Berala and arrested a 23-year-old man.

He was taken to Auburn Police Station where he was charged with common assault, destroy or damage property, and robbery.

The Berala man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Saturday 6 June 2020).
