Masterplan endorsed for Harold Phillips Park

A plan to upgrade Harold Phillips Park has reached another milestone after councillors endorsed the masterplan for the Garbutt park at today’s Ordinary Meeting.

Townsville City Council developed the masterplan following extensive consultation with the community about what they would like to see at the park.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the masterplan is an important document for shaping the community’s vision of what they want to see at the open space.

“Having access to quality open spaces for residents and visitors is a priority for Council,” Cr Hill said.

“They create an environment for everyone to enjoy, help keep our city cooler and support biodiversity in local areas.

“The community has told Council they want to see sporting fields, playgrounds, shade and seating and a new skatepark, which the Queensland Government has committed $1 million towards.

“Park renewals, like the one outlined in the Harold Phillips Park Masterplan, contribute significantly to the liveability and neighbourhood character of suburbs and are highly valued by the community.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson and divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the masterplan gives Council an informed direction for any potential upgrades to the Garbutt park.

“Through consulting, we have been able to get the views from a broad cross-section of the community, including nearby residents, visitors, young people, families and sporting clubs, about what they want at the park.

“We want to see people being able to utilise and enjoy this space as best as possible, and the input received has been very valuable to shaping the plan,” Cr Greaney said.
