The nursing team in Mater Private Hospital Townsville’s Intensive Care Unit have been recognised for their dedication to their patients – taking home the Consumer Experience award in the 2023 Mater People Awards.
The awards celebrate the almost 11,000 Mater people across Queensland who go above and beyond every day in clinical and non-clinical roles to provide exceptional care to patients.
Mater Health Executive Director Paul Darcy said the ICU team – who cared for 944 patients over the past 12 months, providing 2,044 days of care – were nominated by their colleagues for ensuring the best quality of care for each patient.
“I want to congratulate our local Intensive Care Unit for being selected out of an incredible number of nominations state-wide for providing the most outstanding consumer experience to every person they see,” Mr Darcy said.
“At the end of 2022, the ICU team discharged their longest-stay patient in Mater Private Hospital Townsville history: this patient spent almost a year under the care of our ICU team, who she formed incredibly close bonds with, and who worked closely in collaboration with her carers and Mater Education staff to allow her to return home prior to Christmas.
“This patient’s family were not local, so the team ensured she was never lonely by collecting photos and colouring in to decorate her room, keeping her company, and ensuring she was comfortable.”
Townsville was well-represented at the 2023 Mater People Awards, with finalists in five separate categories.
“Mater Private Hospital Townsville continue to lead the way in delivering exceptional healthcare, and this is reflected in a number of individuals and teams from our facility named as finalists in the 2023 Mater People Awards,” Mr Darcy said.
“These nominations span all areas of our hospital, from our team of dedicated volunteers to Allied Health staff, the ICU team, and our local Mater Education educators.
“The win for our ICU team also comes on the 30th anniversary of the Intensive Care Unit opening at Mater Private Hospital Townsville in 1993.
“It is incredible to see the progress made in this time, and for this team to now be recognised as leaders in their field.”
