Matildas mania hits fever-pitch as fan site expands

South Australian Tourism Commission

With football fever high and an outpouring of support for the national women’s team in its FIFA Women’s World Cup™ quest, a new live site will be available to fans in South Australia to watch Wednesday night’s Semi Final.

The FIFA Fan Festival™ at Festival Plaza remains the place to go for an official FIFA World Cup™ experience, while a live site at The Drive on War Memorial Drive will accommodate the expected overflow of fans wanting to revel in ‘Matilda mania’.

Entry to both sites will be free, with no tickets required.

The FIFA Fan Festival™ at Festival Plaza, the official fan site of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in Adelaide/Tarntanya, will have additional screens and extra capacity for the match against England. Gates will open from 5pm.

The FIFA Fan Festival™ will include entertainment, DJ Ruby Chew, family activities plus a showcase of the state’s exceptional culinary scene curated by Callum Hann from Sprout.

Already, more than 50,000 people have experienced the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ at Festival Plaza.

In anticipation of increased demand for the Semi Final, The Drive on Adelaide’s War Memorial Drive will become a live site broadcasting the match on the big screen.

The Drive live site will have food and beverage available on site. Gates will open from 6pm.

The FIFA Fan Festival™ can accommodate up to 3,000 people, while The Drive has capacity for approximately 7,000 people.

In addition to these two large fan sites, pubs and other venues across South Australia will be broadcasting the match live.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said the Matildas’ thrilling Quarter Final victory against France was “one of the most incredible sporting moments in Australian history”.

“This Wednesday’s Semi Final against England promises to be even bigger, so we’re making sure more South Australians can experience it together,” said Premier Malinauskas.

“The next best thing to being at the game is being surrounded by fellow South Australians cheering on the Matildas as they strive to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

“South Australians have embraced the FIFA Fan Festival at Festival Plaza, but in anticipation of increased demand, we’re also screening the match on a big screen at The Drive.

“In addition to these two large fan sites, scores of pubs and other venues across South Australia will also be screening the match on Wednesday night, delivering a further boost to the hospitality sector.”
