Mayor supports Headspace petition

Kiama Council

Gareth Ward MP for Kiama launching Headspace Petition with the Mayor of Kiama Mark Honey and local artist Sam Hall

Mayor Mark Honey has thrown his support behind a petition to the Australian Government to consider funding for a new Headspace service in Kiama.

Clr. Honey has encouraged others to sign the petition, initiated by the Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward MP.

“Given the spike in youth suicides in our community, having a local Headspace service in Kiama would provide vital support to our local young people,” Clr. Honey said.

“A Headspace service would provide education to increase awareness, understanding and provide the skills for young people, as well as their families, friends and wider community, to help support their mental health.”

Clr. Honey said the nearest Headspace services were in Wollongong and Nowra, leaving a significant gap in coverage for the region.

“The Headspace services in Wollongong and Nowra do a magnificent job, but are fully occupied with their local communities, and find it difficult to support our area.”

“Further, having access to local support is especially important for young people, who cannot easily travel out of their area, and prefer a familiar face to talk to.”

Clr. Honey said alternatives such as providing Headspace support remotely over the internet had been trialled but proven unsuccessful.

Clr. Honey also said funding a Headspace service in Kiama could also provide other support services for young people such as relationships, drug and alcohol, work and study, and local employment opportunities.

“We have a responsibility to do everything we possibly can to provide the necessary access to services and support for our young people, especially those who are vulnerable and at-risk.”

“I encourage our community to support this initiative and sign the petition.”
