Medicines just got cheaper

Department of Health

Since 1 September 2023, selected medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) are available for a 60-day prescription.

Doctors now have the option to prescribe a 60-day supply of selected medicines to Australians with stable, ongoing health conditions – the previous limit was for a 30-day supply.

This means many patients may halve their medicine costs and need fewer visits to the doctor to get the medicines they use the most.

The change will happen in 3 stages over 12 months, with more medicines added at each stage.

By September 2024, more than 300 medicines will be available for a 60-day prescription and 6 million Australians will benefit from reduced medicine costs.

Information and resources are available on the website and aim to raise awareness of the change and encourage eligible people to talk to their doctor to see if a 60-day prescription is right for them.
