A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 69-year-old man from metropolitan Adelaide, who sadly died in hospital overnight.
The strain has been identified as serotype W.
Multiple people who had close contact with the man have been identified, and one person has been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.
Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: National Guidelines for Public Health Units.
This is the fifth case of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year, compared to two cases recorded at the same time last year. Of the five cases, two were serogroup B and three were serogroup W.
A total of five cases were reported in 2020. Of the five cases, three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.
