Mental Health Week Grants Open

Mental Health Week this year is on between 5-13 October, with events being held right across the State.

This year’s theme of ‘Appreciate the little things’ encourages Tasmanians to tap into their individual strengths, to understand, value, and take charge of their own mental health and wellbeing.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said it’s important to reflect on what we can do, and often already do, in our daily lives that can have a positive impact.

“Good mental health means something different for every person, and we each have little things that help us to stay mentally healthy – like spending time with friends and family, playing with pets, taking a walk in the sunshine, or reading a good book,” Minister Barnett said.

“The Tasmanian Government is committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians, evidenced through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

“We have established the Premier’s Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Advisory Council to coordinate and progress the actions under the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-2027 and Rethink 2020, Tasmania’s overarching mental health plan, to ensure that Tasmanians have access to world class systems of care, including alternative services for people to avoid acute hospitalisation where this is not necessary.

“Our Government is pleased to support the Mental Health Council of Tasmania with $40,000 for the Mental Health Week small grants program, which is now taking applications, to engage communities in activities that promote mental health and wellbeing and reduce stigma.

“In previous years, grant funding has assisted community groups, organisations, and schools to host activities and events during Mental Health Week like a Nutbush Challenge, picnics, art, storytelling, dog walking, educational workshops, exhibitions, films, music, comedy shows and everything in between.
