Council’s life-changing Y drive program is celebrating its first P-plater for 2021 – but more volunteer mentors are needed to help other young learner drivers get their licence.
Y drive pairs learners who don’t have access to a car or a licensed driver with volunteer supervisors, known as mentors, who help them get the 120 hours of driving experience they need for their Ps in Council Y drive cars.
Batemans Bay’s Joshua Stanley is the program’s most recent graduate, earning his Ps last month. There to congratulate him on the day was his mentor Ray Carnall, who also helped Joshua’s brother Jacob get his license through the program.
Council’s Y drive project officer Annette Greer said 24 more learners were signed up to the program but only 20 mentors.
“If you are a patient person who loves driving and has two to four hours each week to help support this amazing program, we would love to hear from you,” she said.
“We have learners in Narooma and Moruya needing mentors to help them achieve their provisional licence, but we want to hear from potential mentors in Batemans Bay too.”
Ms Greer said Y drive now also supported learners to get their Ls by helping them prepare for the Driver Knowledge Test.
“Two of our mentors have taken up this new mentoring opportunity, which has created a greater need for mentors,” Ms Greer said.
