METRONET Lakelands Station taking shape as work continues

  • Construction ramps up on METRONET Lakelands Station, with work underway on station building, platform, bus interchange and car park
  • Users of the station will benefit from the McGowan Government’s new two-zone fare cap
  • Project expected to support around 200 jobs during construction
  • McGowan Government delivering 15 METRONET projects
  • The METRONET Lakelands Station construction site has become a hive of activity, with work ramping up on the Mandurah Line’s newest station.

Lakelands Station will bridge the 23 kilometre distance between Warnbro and Mandurah stations for those living in growing surrounding suburbs such as Madora Bay, Lakelands and Meadow Springs.

Work is underway to prepare the site for a major bridge lift next month, where the station’s 50 tonne, 15.5 metre long concourse bridge will be crane-lifted into place.

As the station’s two train platforms begin to take shape, work to install the elevator shaft and 60 pre-cast concrete panels is also underway. This infrastructure will support the future station entry and bus interchange buildings.

Bulk earthworks are also continuing across the site to facilitate construction of the car park and the bus interchange. Track drainage works and the installation of below-ground stormwater pipework and electrical services are also progressing.

The station is expected to open in 2023 – with the cost of trips on the services greatly reduced thanks to the McGowan Government’s two-zone fare cap.

Lakelands Station is jointly funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“The construction of Lakelands Station is progressing well, with thousands of people in surrounding suburbs set to benefit from this brand new station on the Mandurah Line.

“This major project bridges the gap between existing stations to provide convenient, affordable public transport options for these communities.

“Thanks to our new two-zone fare cap, introduced by my Government at the beginning of this year, commuters will pay much less for a trip into the city from Lakelands Station when it opens.”

“Lakelands Station is just one of the 15 METRONET projects we are delivering – transforming WA’s public transport network while creating thousands of local jobs.”

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“The Mandurah Line has already undergone an exciting change this year, with our 20-day shutdown to facilitate major works on the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link successfully completed.

“We also recently opened the Mandurah multi-storey car park, another key Peel METRONET commitment.

“Lakelands Station is another important part of changes to the Peel transport network and it is exciting to see how much work has been achieved to date and how many new construction milestones are approaching in the coming months – such as the concourse bridge lift.

“A growing number of families are choosing to call the suburbs surrounding Lakelands Station home and this new train station, complete with bus interchange and car park, will give them more options when it comes to their travelling needs.”

As stated by Mandurah MLA David Templeman:

“Regular commuters on the train from Mandurah will have noticed the ever-changing view out the window as they travel over the busy Lakelands Station construction site.

“This station, combined with our recently opened METRONET Mandurah multi-storey car park will change the way residents in Peel access public transport.”

As stated by Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday:

“Over the past 15 years the Mandurah Line has become a key part of the transport network for people in this part of the State – helping to provide affordable, accessible links to the rest of the metropolitan area.

“The new Lakelands Station will provide another connection along the line, helping better connect our communities with quality public transport.”

As stated by Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:

“The development of the Mandurah Line has provided so many benefits to communities south of the metro area – enabling better links with the city and creating thousands of local jobs.

“The new Lakelands Station is supporting about 200 local jobs in its construction, helping to drive more economic activity and opportunities for Western Australian businesses.”
