Our midwives are there for some of the most important moments in a family’s life, and it’s the life-changing care delivered by Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District registered midwife Mithra Kennaugh that has earnt her a nomination as a finalist at the 2023 NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

Mithra is in the running to receive the Healing Heart Award, a consumer nominated award which recognises a nurse or midwife who consistently provides extraordinary, safe, quality and compassionate care with an uncompromising commitment to elevating the patient experience.

She was nominated by a local family who say Mithra demonstrated outstanding compassion, respect, and friendly professionalism as she walked with them during the birth and death of their beloved daughter.

Mithra describes the nomination as both a shock and an honour.

“When I found out who I’d been nominated by it just made it all the more special. I’m passionate about supporting families through perinatal loss, and to know that my care made one family’s pain even slightly bearable makes me feel proud and humbled by the circumstances,” Mithra says.

Having previously worked at Nepean Hospital, Mithra joined the midwifery team at Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital one year ago. Her career has had a rather surprising trajectory as Mithra was first a teacher before she seized the opportunity to study midwifery after having her own babies.

Mithra’s passion for midwifery practice and the women and families she cares for is undeniable.

“I love all of it. I love sharing the excitement of a pregnancy. I love educating women and families. I love the absolute privilege of being present as a new baby is born into the world and welcomed into their family. I love supporting and educating new parents postnatally, and watching them grow with confidence. It’s really one of the most rewarding jobs I think you could find.”

Describing the midwifery care she provides, Mithra says, “I support women the way I would want my daughter, sister or friends to be supported, and I know that even the smallest kindnesses can make a huge difference to someone’s experience.”

Finalists and winners of the 2023 Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards will be celebrated at an Awards ceremony on 16 November 2023.
