Million Minds Mission first round grants now open

Submissions are now open for the first roll out of grants under the Liberal National Government’s Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission, aimed at developing new approaches to prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat mental illness.

The priorities of the first $25 million round of funding will be child and youth mental health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health, and eating disorders.

The grants will focus on innovative, participatory, and intervention focused research into the causes of mental illness and the best early intervention, prevention and treatment strategies.

In total, funding of $125 million over 10 years from 2017-18 will be allocated from the Medical Research Future Fund to help a million people be part of new trials and programs aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

More than 3.8 million Australians aged between 16 and 85 experience a mental illness each year.

The Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission will protect, save and improve lives.

The Million Minds Mission is guided by an expert advisory panel co-chaired by Professor Shitij Kapur and Professor Helen Milroy. The panel will review assessed applications and make final recommendations to the Government on which projects will yield the greatest mental health benefits for Australians.

The grants opportunity, the first under the Million Minds Mission Roadmap, is further a demonstration of the Government’s unprecedented commitment to strengthen mental health care.

The Liberal National Government is prioritising better mental health for all Australians with an additional $338.1 million allocated in the 2018–19 Budget and $4.7 billion expected to be spent on mental health this financial year.

Our Government’s strong economic management ensures we continue to invest record amounts of funding into vital health initiatives including mental health, life-saving medicines, Medicare and hospitals.

To apply visit www.grants.gov.au. Applications close 20 February 2019.
