All Australians can vote at the home of Australian democracy from 7 October 2023 The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House (MoAD) will open its doors to voters in the upcoming referendum, serving as a polling venue for the nation’s first referendum of the 21st century.
On Saturday 14 October 2023, MoAD will transform into an Australian Electoral Commission polling booth, and all registered voters are invited to cast their ballots in the iconic King’s Hall. MoAD Director, Stephanie Bull, said ‘The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House is a remarkable place to cast your ballot. Vote in the place where decisions that shaped the nation were made, and where history happened. We’re inviting Australians to have their say in this magnificent building’.
After casting their vote, visitors can deepen their civic engagement by exploring the building steeped in Australian history, having a seat in the Senate Chamber or taking in the contemporary exhibitions.
Visitors can also meet their match in ‘A Blind Date with Democracy’, an experience designed to get them up close and personal with some of the cornerstones of our democratic system. For families, Open Air PlayUP will also be back in the Senate Courtyard offering outdoor games and fun in the sunshine (weather dependent).
And, because no voting day is complete without a democracy sausage, volunteers from the Tuggeranong Rotary Club will be crewing the barbeque to make sure no ballots are cast on an empty stomach. On 14 October voting booths will be open from 8 am to 6 pm.
