Monash helping up skill hospital staff to support COVID-19 response

Monash University’s Peninsula Campus has joined forces with Frankston Hospital (Peninsula Health) to enable the rapid increase in training of staff in clinical procedures to deliver best practice care for COVID-19 patients.

All health services have been asked to plan and prepare for a surge in COVID-19 patients. Some sources indicate this could require an approximate increase of 300 per cent for senior doctors and registered ICU nurses.

This presented a new training challenge for Samantha Sevenhuysen, Director of Education and Training at Peninsula Health. “Social-distancing prevents large group training and we can’t have a lot of people training at the ICU bedside, so we needed to convert as much content as possible to online,” she said.

However, due to the nature of the training, including higher risk clinical procedures, the quality of the online education was of utmost importance. Utilising the state-of-the-art recording studio at Monash University’s Peninsula Campus has enabled Peninsula Health to upskill healthcare workers through remote learning.

The studio was purpose built to deliver the best online training experience possible for Monash’s health professional courses. It allows for high quality recordings of practical skill demonstrations, offering multiple camera angles including an overhead view, which is crucial when filming critical tasks like intubation procedures and caring for ventilated patients.

“Frankston is the centre of the Peninsula’s COVID-19 response, and it’s great to be involved with such committed health care professionals and education experts in keeping our community safe,” Samantha Sevenhuysen, Director of Education and Training at Peninsula Health said.

Associate Professor Stephen Maloney, Deputy Head of School, Primary and Allied Health Care, Peninsula Campus, said the studio was proving crucial in these unprecedented times to support our critical care health workforce.

“Now more than ever this is one of our most important classrooms on campus,” he said.
