Monash University has been working with Vicinity Centres on a $1.4 billion proposal to run high-capacity electric trackless vehicles along the busy traffic corridor between Caulfield and Rowville.
The 19km route, which would take in Monash University’s Clayton campus and Chadstone Shopping Centre, could carry 1800 passengers per hour in each direction, and help to significantly reduce traffic congestion.
Monash University-Vicinity Centres proposal does not require expensive infrastructure, such as dedicated tracks and overhead power lines, with vehicles running on renewable electricity and charging at stops.
The project would require modifications to existing roads, mostly median strips and service roads, and could be up and running by 2025 – at least four years before the first part of the Suburban Rail Loop is opened.
Economic analysis shows the project would create almost 2500 jobs and inject $427.4 million into the economy each year.
Monash, Glen Eira and Knox City councils have all backed the proposal, while the Federal and Victorian governments have been briefed on the project.
Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC said this was an exciting project that had the potential to solve a lack of public transport in the region.
“As Australia’s largest university, the population of Monash University’s Clayton campus can reach the size of a major regional city on any given day. Additional public transport options are integral to reducing congestion around the University and local roads, providing sustainable, environmentally-friendly transport alternatives for the community, and enhancing connectivity with our industry and commercialisation partners.
“This simple, cost-effective transport solution will help streamline the commute for thousands of people each day along the busy road corridor between Caulfield and Rowville. It will also increase access to the Suburban Rail Loop through its connections to the Monash station.
“Monash University has welcomed previous commitments from the Federal and State governments to deliver transport solutions for the southeast economic corridor. We urge the governments to prioritise funding for this significant project.”
