The ACT Government will create jobs and keep our city beautiful by investing more than $6 million in surge funding to manage rapid grass growth and repair damaged roads caused by recent record rainfall.
Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said that Canberra has experienced high levels of rainfall in recent months, due to La Niña conditions, resulting in prolific grass and weed growth, along with damage to Canberra’s roads.
“While the recent rain has been welcome, it has seen an increase to damage to our roads and rapid growth of vegetation across some parts of the city,” Minister Steel said.
“This additional investment will create 24 new jobs and allow us to source more equipment as our teams on the ground continue to work seven days a week to keep up with increased demand.”
Minister Steel said this investment would also deliver on ACT Labor’s election commitment to fast-track pothole repair across the ACT within the first six months of Government.
“We are beginning work immediately to deliver our election commitment to fix the additional potholes that have formed on ACT roads as a result of La Nina weather conditions,” Minister Steel said.
“Importantly, repairs will not only include immediate use of cold-mix asphalt, but also heavy patching where appropriate to permanently repair the road pavement.
“Preventative treatments such as waterproofing road pavements will also be utilised to stop potholes forming in the first place and extend the life of existing pavement surfaces.
“This investment is in addition to the ongoing preventative road maintenance program which began in October and will help ensure that our City is well presented and safe for all Canberrans.”
