The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering our plan for a Northern Correctional Facility (NCF) that will make our communities safer, while providing improved opportunities for rehabilitation.
Attorney-General and Minister for Corrections and Rehabilitation, Elise Archer said that this modern facility will be designed to deliver improved rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities for offenders who come into contact with our Corrections system, while making our communities safer.
“The Department of Justice, through its dedicated NCF Project Team, continues to progress the due diligence investigations required as part of the normal statutory planning process for the development of this project at the current Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC) site,” the Attorney-General said.
“As part of this process, a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) and Historic (European) Heritage Assessment (HHAR) have now been completed by independent specialists Midson Traffic Pty Ltd and Southern Archaeology respectively.
“As promised, our Government has today released these reports, in line with our commitment to update the community as this important project progresses.
The HHAR determined that the proposed development is unlikely to impact or uncover significant archaeology within the AYDC site. In acknowledgement of the age of the property, an Unanticipated Discovery Protocol will be used to manage the unlikely event of discoveries uncovered during the works.
The TIA was reviewed by the Department of State Growth which raised no specific concerns. The report notes the current road infrastructure will be sufficient to handle increased traffic movements from the proposed development, as long as appropriate turning facilities are installed for the existing access to Meander Valley Road, and similarly for any additional access to the site from Meander Valley Road.
