More Tasmanians can now access training for skills as part of the $2 billion JobTrainer fund, thanks to an extension of the successful program in Tasmania.
Jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Tasmanian governments, JobTrainer provides free or low-fee training for job seekers and young people, including school leavers, to upskill or reskill in areas of identified skills need.
Federal Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, Stuart Robert, said the Tasmanian Government has now signed up to an extension of the successful program with course enrolments available now.
‘Tasmania has an important role to play in the national economic recovery and this extension will see an additional $21 million delivered for skills and training in the state, which is a great deal for Tasmanians and a win-win for the state’s economy,’ Minister Robert said.
‘With almost 7,500 JobTrainer-funded enrolments so far in Tasmania, and more than 327,000 across the country, I would invite job seekers and young people to have a crack and help further strengthen our economic future.’
Tasmanian Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Roger Jaensch, said the expansion will help deliver more support for important sectors across the State.
‘We’ve committed an additional $10.5 million for Tasmania, matched dollar for dollar by the Australian Government, to extend JobTrainer by an estimated 7000 additional places and bringing the Tasmanian Government’s contribution to $21 million since 2020,’
Minister Jaensch said. ‘This extension will allow any Tasmanian to enrol in aged care, disability care, child care and digital skills courses, regardless of their age, employment status or prior qualifications, and access support under JobTrainer.’
The first round of the JobTrainer Fund saw almost 7000 training places created in areas of strategic priority for Tasmania, including training in agriculture, business services, manufacturing, maritime, seafood, health, construction and community services.
More than 3000 Tasmanians have already completed a training course funded by JobTrainer. Minister Robert said the Morrison Government is helping deliver the workforce of the future.
‘The Morrison Government is investing a record $7.8 billion this financial year on skills and training, including support for apprentices, delivering real skills for real careers,’ Minister Robert said.
‘This will also help us build a workforce with the right skills to meet the demands of the economy and the community – here in Tasmania and across Australia – into the future.’
JobTrainer funding, in conjunction with state and territory governments, is available for both full qualifications and short courses, based on areas of identified need or employment growth.
