More transparency needed for child safety

Tasmanian Labor
  • Two more SERT reports referred to the coroner
  • Government needs to be held accountable
  • Minister reluctant to comment on systemic failures
  • The tragic news out of parliament today of a further two Serious Events Review Team (SERT) reports being referred to the coroner since June last year is extremely concerning.

Shadow Minister for Child Safety Josh Willie said the government needs to be held accountable for the child safety failures happening on its watch.

“It is heartbreaking to hear of another two SERT reports being referred to the coroner, and our hearts go out to the families affected by these tragedies, and the child safety staff involved.

“There is no more important job than keeping children and young people safe.

“It is our duty to hold the government accountable and to ensure there are learnings from these tragic events.

“The Minister has been reluctant to comment on systemic child safety failures. Greater transparency is required and Roger Jaensch needs to ensure the department implements reform to prevent these heartbreaking events from occurring.

“Tasmanians need to be reassured that there is every possible measure in place to protect our children and young people.”
