The Coronavirus pandemic has brought a new set of challenges to communities all over Australia and the Mornington Peninsula Shire is proactively addressing these challenges locally.
The ‘Caring for our Community’ initiative addresses an immediate issue of making sure vulnerable and isolated members of our community are looked after by delivering care packages to their door.
The initiative will be coordinated by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council who are currently speaking with other levels of Government, Local Health & Welfare Agencies and Community Leaders about partnering and supporting the program.
Shire staff will be re-directed from non-essential services and community volunteers will be requested to support the program. This provides a direct way for community and Shire team members to get involved in helping those most at risk during this challenging time.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Sam Hearn said we need to be at our very best as a community in these times.
“We were all so heartened by the overwhelming community response to the recent Bushfire emergency that showed the Aussie spirit is alive and well,” Mayor Hearn said.
“This is a wonderful initiative that will see that spirit rise again as we work collectively to help those around us and support our local community.”
The initiative aims to support vulnerable and isolated community members with care packages delivered to their door; promote social responsibility and community looking out for each other; encourage our community to get through this challenge together.
Mayor Hearn said he was excited by the potential of this innovative project and believed it would result in a number of benefits to the community.
“By directly supporting our most vulnerable residents I believe we’ll see a greater sense of community connectedness as people help each other through difficult times”
“This is a priority for the Shire and the aim is to have it up and running as soon as possible,” concluded Mayor Hearn.
