As the Snowy Monaro looks set for a bumper winter season, we here at Council want to welcome all our visitors and new residents to the region – and issue a friendly reminder to Recycle Right while you’re here.
Recycling and waste management works a bit differently between different areas. What you can recycle in some places, might not be OK to go in the yellow bin here. So whether you’re new, passing through, or it’s just been a while since you brushed up on your recycling dos and don’ts – we’re here to help!
In April 2022, we partnered with an independent waste auditor to do a kerbside bin audit. As was the case in previous years, it’s clear that we can all do our part to raise recycling rates and reduce the rate of rubbish and other contaminants getting into our yellow bins.
What you can put in your recycling bin: Household bottles and containers – including glass bottles and jars, firm plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, aluminium foil, empty aerosols, clean paper products, newspapers and long-life cartons
What you can’t: soft plastics, plastics with recycling triangle numbers #4, #6, and #7, shredded paper, polystyrene, batteries, food scraps, clothing or textiles, nappies or hygiene products.
Snowy Monaro Regional Council is proud to be a part of the regional Recycle Right campaign, helping make it simple when using your recycling bin:
- Keep it simple: Only recycle paper and cardboard, steel and aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers.
- Keep out soft plastics: This includes all plastic bags, even if they have a recycling symbol, are degradable or compostable, and other soft plastics including cling wrap, chip packets and bread bags.
- Keep out small items: Any items smaller than a credit card. All plastic lids now need to be removed from bottles and those smaller than a credit card put in your landfill bin.
- Keep it safe: Keep out strapping, hose, netting, wires, building materials and other hazardous materials.
- Keep it Clean: Wipe or rinse any excess food and drink from all bottles, containers and tins before placing them in your recycling bin. Keep out food scraps, nappies and soiled paper
- Keep it Loose: put each item into your yellow recycling bin separately, don’t bag, box or contain your recyclable items.
Council received confirmation from the Hume Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that around 90% of the non-contaminated recyclables collected and sorted through the facility are recycled right here in Australia.
