Moves to rename Blackfellows Creek Park

Council has endorsed a request by Traditional Owners to rename Blackfellows Creek Park to Allan and May Oliver Park / Bana Gindarja Park.

Traditional Owners have advised the name is no longer considered culturally appropriate.

Allan and May Oliver were traditional owners who had strong cultural links to the area and were also very prominent in the local sporting (rugby league) community over a number of decades.

The name Bana Gindarja refers to the cassowary, an important cultural totem.

Council will now undertake consultation, as required by the Naming of Parks and Reserves General Policy, for the renaming of Blackfellows Creek Park.
