National Ag Day: Celebrating our farmers and world-class industry

AgForce will bring the countryside to the city later this month as Australia celebrates its fifth National Agriculture Day.

Led by the National Farmers’ Federation, #AgDayAU on November 19 is supported by Aussies far and wide as the nation unites to pay homage to the world-class food and fibre we all enjoy.

This year we’re also celebrating the fabulous and fulfilling career opportunities on offer in agriculture, under the theme #AgVenture.

AgForce General President Georgie Somerset said there had never been a more important time to share stories from the paddock with the young and old.

“National Ag Day marks a time to celebrate the everyday extraordinary efforts of our farmers and all that is good about Australian agriculture,” she said.

“We have an industry that is the envy of much of the world.

“As Australians we stand united in the surety that for seven days a week, 365 days of every year we have fresh, healthy and locally grown food on our supermarket shelves.

“Not even the COVID-19 pandemic could break our spirit. Our farmers stood strong in the face of huge challenges and continued to grow the food and fibre we all depend on.”

Ms Somerset said the #AgVenture theme was a great way to encourage young people to think about a career in agriculture.

“Whatever your passion, skill set or location, when it comes to life on the land there is something for everyone,” she added.

“From mustering cattle in the Top End to developing the next breakthrough wheat variety, you really can choose your own #AgVenture.

“The quintessential farm jobs that have in many ways defined agriculture are still there and new entrants are desperately needed for jobs like shearers, roustabouts, station hands, header operators, and stock truck drivers.

“But there are also many other jobs, lots of which can be city or country based, that aren’t on-farm, but which are vital in the farm supply chain – including careers in fields as diverse as finance, digital tech, science, marketing, trade, and policy development.

“Ultimately for our industry to continue to grow powerfully, we must engage with the next generation.

“We need to cultivate ‘a new crop’ with the same resilience, energy and passion as the current crew, and National Ag Day is the perfect opportunity to do just that.”
